Personality: Midas is an extremely laid back dog at home. He’s content to just be in my presence napping, relaxing or chewing on his favorite toy. He tries very hard to please me and do whatever I ask. He does have a tendency to get a little worked up at events, but we’re working on that. He’s extremely intelligent and easy to train, but a little stubborn too.Picking Him Out: I got Midas from a backyard breeder, I did not know any better. I decided I was going to get a puppy 4 months before I was going to move to Grand Rapids and set aside the money for purchase and vet appointments. I decided on a Lab because it made finding a place to rent easier. I knew I wanted a very dark or fox red yellow Labrador Retriever. The day I moved my first load up to my new place I decided spur-of-the-moment to check the local newspaper for pups. There was a litter in Hudsonville that said they were fox red. I called and the breeders said it would be fine to stop out. The mother was onsite with a photo of the father available and one of the females from their litter last year. There were nine puppies and I was the very first person to look at the litter, so I would be the first to pick a pup. I was pretty set on a male but decided that if there was a “perfect” female I would go with her. There were only two males in the litter, one was quite a bit smaller and extremely shy, the other was one of the biggest two pups of the litter and extremely out-going. He was running around and roughhousing with the best of them. He seemed especially inclined to sneak up and steal the other pups’ toys. There was also a female approximately the same size and temperament. We separated those two after watching them interact in the litter for a while so that I could see how they reacted to me. They were both great pups. Since I had been leaning toward a male I went with him because otherwise I would never have been able to choose one. He was pretty good on the ride home and let us know when he had to have a potty break. His training was a breeze; he picked up on everything really fast and has made me one of the best dogs I have been with.
