More Than Just Stats

Personality: Mason is much more sensitive than Midas. A dirty look in his direction will usually suffice to get him to quit whatever he’s doing. He loves attention from anyone and to nap on the hardwood floors directly in front of the AC vents. He also enjoys watching TV, especially if it involves dogs. He is a very, happy and enthusiastic boy whose tail is constantly wagging, even when he’s swimming. Mason always gives 110%.

Picking Him Out: We bought Mason before I learned about the ethics behind breeding. Mason is a “silver” lab. The people we bought him from seemed to genuinely care about their dog and her pups but had done no clearances and nothing to prove the quality of their female; things that we did not know to look for. They were backyard breeders. We thought the silver color was striking and unique, little did we know the controversy surrounding it. Mason was an extremely difficult puppy. He was constantly sick, the entire summer, mainly with things that caused massive diarrhea. We were in and out of the vet clinic on numerous occasions, more than once to the emergency vet. After untold amounts of money, we made it through the summer and he was finally healthy. But we had a continuing battle to potty-train him. He seemed to struggle with several rudimentary skills and it took us a long time, and a lot of problems before he learned these basics. We are still struggling with some things. He has an extremely dry, brittle coat and sheds huge amounts of hair all year around. We are currently trying a new fish-based food to see if that will help. We are hoping that this will be the extent of his issues; that he won’t end up with any severe diseases/problems in the future.

These problems are mostly the result of not buying from a reputable breeder who does health clearances on their breeding stock. While this was a huge mistake and has caused a lot of trouble and money, we still love Mason. He is a terrific pet and really gives his all in anything we ask him to do. I am not ashamed of the dog, I only wish that we had been more informed before we purchased him. Mason is quite inbred as well and every silver lab breeder I’ve found online that posts pedigrees has at least one ancestor in common with him.
